Paediatrics - ENT Flashcards
Name 3 causes of conductive hearing loss
glue ear, wax, perforated ear drum, abnormal outer ear, eustrachian tube dysfunction
What can happen if hearing loss if not identified?
communication difficulties, social isolation, depression, increased quality of life, decreased independance
What is the difference between conductive and sensorineural hearing loss?
Conductive loss - bone conduction better than sensorineural due to problems in middle/inner ear, eardrum
Sensorineural - bone and sensorineural loss same due to problem in cochlear
How would you treat glue ear?
- Do nothing
- Input grommets
- Hearing aids
What is glue ear?
Otitis media with effusion in children <12 years
with hearing loss 25-30 dB
on 2 occasions, 3 months apart
Why are children more prone to otitis media?
eustachian tubes are shorter, horizontal and function badly
What are grommets?
ventilation tubes put into eardrum to allow air to pass into the middle ear
