Whooping cough causative organism + type
Bordetella pertussis - gram neg baccilus
How do symptoms of whooping cough start?
With coryzal symptoms, a low grade fever and possibly a mild dry cough.
Phases of whooping cough?
- Catarrhal phase
- Paroxysmal phase
- Convalescent phase
How long does the catarrhal phase last for? (whooping cough)
1 - 2 weeks
Catarrhal phase signs in whooping cough
Rhinitis
Conjunctivitis
Irritability
Sore throat
Low-grade fever
Dry cough
Paroxysmal phase of whooping cough lasts…
For 2 - 8 weeks
What occurs in the paroxysmal phase of whooping cough?
- Episodes of severe paroxysms (attacks) of coughing followed by an inspiratory gasp (“whoop” sound)
- In infants below 3 months of age, the “whoop” is less common and apnoea is more often a feature.
- Coughing attacks are more common at night and are often followed by vomiting and may be severe enough to cause cyanosis.
What occurs in the convalescent phase of whooping cough?
Dry cough that lasts up to 3 months
Bronchiolitis/viral respiratory infection vs pertussis?
Wheeze and / or crackles present in bronchiolitis on auscultation
