Joints Flashcards
Sternoclavicular joint degree of freedom / type
3° / Atypical synovial saddle joint
Sternoclavicular joint articular surface
● Sternal end of clavicle
● Sternum of manubrium
● 1st costal cartilage
Sternoclavicular joint capsular attachment
Sternoclavicular ligament
● Anterior
● Posterior
Sternoclavicular joint articular disc/intracapsular structure
(A) Fibrocartilage disk from clavicle superiorly to costal cartilage (deepens socket for shock absorber)
Sternoclavicular joint intrinsic / extrinsic ligament
Extrinsic Costoclavicular (1st rib - costal cartilage to inferior margin of clavicle medial end)
Sternoclavicular joint movements
- Horizontal flexion / extension (disc ʹ manubrium)
- Elevation / depression (disc - clavicle)
- Rotation of limb (medial clavicle ʹ costoclavicular
ligament)
Sternoclavicular joint stable?
Stable - strong ligaments
Sternoclavicular joint relations
Posterior ʹ vascular relations, trachea
Sternoclavicular joint blood / nerve supply
- Internal thoracic, suprascapular
- Subclavius, supraclavicular
Sternoclavicular joint clinical problems
Very strong, hard to dislocation (only fracture)
- Costoclavicular rupture ʹ difficult to maintain position
Acromioclavicular joint type/ degree of freedom
1° / Atypical synovial plane joint
Acromioclavicular joint articular surface
- Clavicle
- Acromion
Acromioclavicular capsular attachment
- Acromioclavicular ligament
- Trapezius fibre
Acromioclavicular Articular disc / Intracapsular structure
- (A) Incomplete ʹ wedged-shaped
- (I) Synovial membrane ʹ line fibrous capsule
Acromioclavicular intrinsic / extrinsic ligament
(E) - Coracoclavicular (anchors lateral clavicle to coracoid process = conoid & trapezoid)
