P9 - Motion 2️⃣✅ Flashcards
What is speed?
Speed is the distance travelled over a certain amount of time
What are the units for speed?
m/s
What is a light gate?
A piece of equipment that can measure the speed of an object instantly
What is the equation for speed?
speed = distance/ time
What is a distance time graph?
A graph that shows a journey with distance on the y axis and time on the x axis
What is the equation for average speed?
total distance travelled/ total time taken
How do you work out the gradient of a line?
rise/run
What does it mean when a line is curved on a distance time graph?
It means that objects speed is increasing and not at a constant speed
What does it mean when a line is straight (/) on a distance time graph?
It means that the object is at a constant speed
What is equation for acceleration?
change in velocity/ time taken
What are the units for acceleration?
m/sSQUARED
What is deacceleration?
Negative acceleration
What is velocity?
Speed in a given direction e.g vector
What is a scalar quantity?
A scalar quantity only has magnitude (size)
What is a vector quantity?
A vector quantity has magnitude (size) and direciton
What does the gradient of a velocity time graph represent?
The acceleration of the object
How do you work out the distance travelled of an object on a velocity time graph?
Work out the area of the shape underneath the line using the scale of the graphjh
What is the motion calculation?
vSQUARED = uSQUARED + 2 x a x s
What does vSQUARED represent in the motion equation?
final velocity m/s
What does uSQUARED represent in the motion equation?
initial velocity m/s
What does a represent in the motion equation?
acceleration m/sSQUARED
What does s represent in the motion equation?
displacement m
What is displacement?
Displacement is the distance travelled in a given direction (vector)
What is the rearranged equation for motion with a as the subject?
a = vSQUARED - USQUARED / 2 x s
What is the rearranged equation for motion with u as the subject?
u = SQUARE ROOT vSQUARED - 2 x a x s
What does it mean when a line is horizontal on a distance time graph?
That the object is stationary
What does a straight (/) line mean on a veloctity time graph?
That the object is accelerating
What does a straight \ line mean on a veloctity time graph?
That the object is deccelerating
What does a horizontal line mean on a velocity time graph?
That the object is at constant velocity (can see velocity from level on y axis)
What does a curved line mean on a velocity time graph?
That the object is increasing/ decreasing acceleration (depended if curve is upwards or downwards)
What is acceleration?
The rate of change of velocity of an object
