P6.1 Density Flashcards
What is the definition of density?
Its mass per unit volume
What is the equation for density?
Density, p = mass / volume
What are the units for density.
Kg/m^3
How can you measure the mass of of an object?
Use an electronic balance
What is a random error?
Made by the person carrying out the measuring, and are usually down to timing incorrectly, or reading the instrument incorrectly
What is a parallax error?
Caused by a student not reading the measurement at eye level.
What are zero erros?
Are caused by faulty equipment that doesn’t reset to zero properly
How can you find the volume of a regular solid?
Measure its dimension using a millimetre - ruler - Vernier callipers
How can you measure a volume of an irregular solid?
Place the object into a displacement can
Place a measuring cylinder to get the volume of displaced water
Measure volume of water
How can you measure the density of a liquid?
Measure mass of an empty beaker using a balance - then remove beaker and pour liquid into the beaker and measure it then calculate the mass
When should you use a metre ruler?
When the range is 1metre and resolution is +- 0.5mm
When should you use vernier callipers?
When resolution is +- 0.05mm
