P4.2 Current and charge Flashcards
What is a battery?
Consists of 2 cells or more
What is a switch?
Enables the current in a circuit to be switched on or off
What is a bulb?
An indicator that emits light as a signal when current is passed through it
What is a diode?
Allows current through in one direction only
What is an LED?
Emits light when a current passes through it
What is an ammeter?
Used to measure currents in Amperes
What is a resistor?
Limits the current in a ciruit
What is a fuse?
Designed to melt and therefore ‘break’ the circuit if the current through it is greater than a certain amount
What is a heater?
Designed to transfer the energy from an electric current to the surroundings
What is a voltmeter?
Used to measure potential difference
What is an electric current?
The flow of charge
What is charge measured in?
Coulombs
What is current measured in?
Amperes
What is the equation for current in a wire?
Charge flow, Q / time taken
How do electrons move in a circuit diagram?
- to + however when drawing circuit diagrams the convention is to show current flowing from + to -
