P1.3 Energy and work Flashcards
What does energy transferred equal?
Work done
What is work done?
When an object is moved by a force - work is being done on the object by the force
What is the equation for work done?
Work done = force applied x distance moved along the line of action of the force
Why do wheel discs and break pads become warm?
Friction between the brake pad and the wheel disc opposes the motion of the wheel
Force of friction does work on the brake pads and wheel discs
Energy is transferred from the kinetic energy store to the thermal energy store
What happens when meteorite enter the Earth’s atmosphere?
Friction caused by air resistance acts upon them - results in energy transferred from Gravitational potential store into kinetic then into the thermal store
How do shooting stars happen?
When meteorites become hot enough - they glow in the sky - hence the “shooting star” effect
