Q

Why do rescue teams use light-colored shiny blankets?

A

Emits a lot less radiation than a dark surface

Keeps the patient warm - as less infrared radiation is emitted

Q

What do carbon dioxide and other greenhouses gases do?

A

Absorb longer wavelengths of infrared radiation from the Earth and prevent it from escaping into space. The gases absorb the radiation and emit it back to the surface. This process makes the earth wammer

Q

Why does the temperature inside the car become hotter than the temperature outside when the windows are closed?

A

infrared radiation from Sun passes through car windows to heat surfaces inside the car
hot surfaces heat the air inside the car so the temperature in the car rises inside surfaces emit more infrared as they heat up until rate emitted = rate absorbed
