P6 - Waves Flashcards
What are transverse waves?
A wave that oscillates perpendicularly to the direction of the waves advance
What are the examples of transverse waves?
- Ripples on the surface of water (Electro-magnetic waves)
- Light waves
- Micro waves
- Radio waves
What are longitudinal waves?
A wave that moves in the same direction in which the particles are vibrating
What are the examples of longitudinal waves?
- Sound waves
- Spring toys
- Guitar strings
What is an oscillation?
The process of moving back and forth regularly
What is a wave length?
The distance from one point of a wave to another
What is a wave speed?
The speed at which the energy is transferred
What is an amplitude?
The furthest point the wave vibrates from the undisturbed position
What is a frequency?
The number of waves passing a point each second
What is the EM spectrum?
R - radio waves
M - micro waves
I - infarared
V - visible light
U - ultra violet
X - X-rays
G - gamma rays
What is refraction?
Waves changing direction at a boundary
