C7 - Crude Oil Flashcards
What are hydrocarbons?
A compound that is formed from hydrogen and carbon atoms only
What is the combustion reaction formula?
Hydrocarbon + oxygen ➡️ carbon dioxide + water
What is crude oil?
A mixture of molecules called hydrocarbons
What do short chain hydrocarbons have?
Low boiling points
What do long chain hydrocarbons have?
High boiling points
What is fractional distillation?
The separation of a mixture into it’s fractions
What is cracking?
Converting long chain hydrocarbons into shorter chain hydrocarbons
What is an Alkene?
A series of unsaturated hydrocarbons, containing a double bond
How do we test for alkenes?
- Use bromine water, which is orange
- Shake alkene with bromine water
- Bromine water will turn colourless
Examples of alkane?
Methane - 4
Ethane - 6
Propane - 8
Butane - 10
Pentane - 12
Hexane - 14
Heptane - 16
Octane - 18
Nonane - 20
Decane - 22
What is an alkane?
A series of compounds that contain hydrocarbon with single covalent bonds
What is the general formula of alkanes?
CnH2n+2
What is the general formula of alkenes?
CnH2n
