B6 Flashcards
What are alleles?
Different types of the same genes
What can alleles be?
Dominant or recessive
What is a dominant allele?
It’s always in the phenotype, even if one copy present
What is a recessive allele?
Only expressed if two copies are present
What is a carrier?
One dominant and one recessive allele
What is embryonic screening?
The process of testing embryos for genetic conditions
What is selective breeding?
A process where you choose specific traits you want to see in plants or animals
What can selective breeding be used for?
Change in behaviour, resistance and change in size
What is genetic engineering?
The process where genes are modified or changed
What are fossils?
Remains of organisms from millions of years ago, found in rocks
How are fossils formed?
When parts of organisms haven’t decayed
Who discovered the system of classifying species based on their characteristics and structure?
Carl Linnaeus
What is the classification system made up of?
King - Kingdom
Philip - phylum
Came - class
Over - order
For - family
Good - genus
Spaghetti - species
