Chromatography practical

A
  • Use a ruler to draw a pencil line horizontally on the paper
  • Line should be around 2cm from the bottom of the paper
  • Mark 5 pencil spots at equal spaces across the line
  • Use a capillary tube to put small spots on each food colours unknown/known onto the pencil spots
  • Pour water into a beaker to a depth of a cm
  • attach paper to a glass rod using tape and then lower the paper into the beaker
  • put lid on beaker to reduce evaporation of the solvent
  • water will move up paper and colours will be carried up
  • remove paper from beaker when water has travelled three-quarters up
  • use pencil line to mark the point where the water has reached
