C8 - Chemical Analysis Flashcards
1
Q
How do we test for chlorine?
A
Chlorine bleaches the damp litmus paper turning it white
2
Q
How do we test for oxygen?
A
Put glowing splint inside a test tube, the oxygen will relight the glowing splint
3
Q
How do we test for carbon dioxide?
A
Bubble carbon dioxide through an aqueous solution of limewater causing the solution to turn cloudy
4
Q
How do we test for hydrogen?
A
Hold lit splint at the open end of a test tube containing hydrogen, you’ll get a “squeaky pop”
5
Q
Chromatography practical
A
- Use a ruler to draw a pencil line horizontally on the paper
- Line should be around 2cm from the bottom of the paper
- Mark 5 pencil spots at equal spaces across the line
- Use a capillary tube to put small spots on each food colours unknown/known onto the pencil spots
- Pour water into a beaker to a depth of a cm
- attach paper to a glass rod using tape and then lower the paper into the beaker
- put lid on beaker to reduce evaporation of the solvent
- water will move up paper and colours will be carried up
- remove paper from beaker when water has travelled three-quarters up
- use pencil line to mark the point where the water has reached
6
Q
What % of the atmosphere is?
A
-78% nitrogen
-21% oxygen
- 0.9% argon
- 0.1% other gases
