P3 elements+oxides(p1) Flashcards
explain magnesium and sodiums reaction with water?why?
sodium- reacts vigorously producing hydrogen gas
magnesium- reacts very slowly forming an alkaline solution
it is requires less energy to remove one electron rather then two like magnesium
which is more reactive with water? magnesium or sodium
sodium
why do Mg,Al,Na oxides all have high melting points?
this is because they form giant ionic lattices. strong forces of attarction=lot of heat energy to break bonds
write these equations for P3 element+O2
- sodium
-magnesium
-aluminum
-silicon
-sulfur
-phosphorus
why does magnesium oxide have the highest melting point out of all the oxides?
magnesium forms 2+ ions which attract O2- ions more strongly
why does aluminium oxide have the lowest melting point?
because the electronegativity between Al and O isnt as large as Mg and O, therefore the O2- cant attract the electrons in the metal-oxygen as strongly making it partially covalent
why does silicon dioxide have the highest melting point out of the non-metals oxides?
it has a giant macromolecular structure w/ strong covalent bonds=high heat energy to break
what solutions do simple covalent oxides and ionic oxides produce?
covalent-acidic
ionic- basic
give the formula of phosphoric acid
H3PO4
give the formula of aluminum sulfate.
Al2(SO4)3
what oxides are insoluble in water?
aluminium and silicon
