P3 elements+oxides(p1) Flashcards

1
Q

explain magnesium and sodiums reaction with water?why?

A

sodium- reacts vigorously producing hydrogen gas
magnesium- reacts very slowly forming an alkaline solution
it is requires less energy to remove one electron rather then two like magnesium

2
Q

why do Mg,Al,Na oxides all have high melting points?

A

this is because they form giant ionic lattices. strong forces of attarction=lot of heat energy to break bonds

Q

why does magnesium oxide have the highest melting point out of all the oxides?

A

magnesium forms 2+ ions which attract O2- ions more strongly

5
Q

why does aluminium oxide have the lowest melting point?

A

because the electronegativity between Al and O isnt as large as Mg and O, therefore the O2- cant attract the electrons in the metal-oxygen as strongly making it partially covalent
