(P2)Plant Structures And Functions Flashcards
What is the word equation for photosynthesis?
Carbon dioxide + water = glucose + oxygen
Explain why temperature is a limiting factor of photosynthesis
A lower temperature reduces the kinetic energy of molecules, reducing the enzyme activity rate making photosynthesis slower
Name and explain 3 plant adaptations for photosynthesis
Stomata - allows co2 from air into leaf and O2 from photosynthesis out of leaf
Xylem cells - bring water
Epidermis cells and waxy cuticle - transparent to let light through
What is a positive tropism?
When a plant responds to a stimulus by growing towards the stimulus
What type of tropism do plant shoots and plant roots show?
Plant shoots: positive phototropism (grow towards light)
Plant roots: positive gravitropism (grow towards pull of gravity)
What are auxins?
Plant hormones that cause cells to elongate and cause phototropism in shoots
How do auxins work?
They are produced at the tip of a shoot. When light is coming in from one side, the auxins move towards the shaded side of the shoot and cause these cells to elongate. The shoot curves towards the light
What do gibberellins do?
They stimulate stem elongation and seed germination
What does ethene gas do?
It causes ripening and controls cell division
How are plants in waterlogged soil adapted?
They have spongy tissue in roots that stores oxygen for respiration
How are plants in dry conditions adapted?
Waxy cuticle to reduce water loss
