Cells Flashcards
Bacterial cells are prokaryotic. What does this mean?
They don’t have a nucleus.
What takes place in the mitochondria?
Respiration (releases energy for cell processes)
What is made in ribosomes?
Proteins (ribosomes are where protein synthesis occurs)
Egg cells and sperm cells have a haploid nucleus. What is this?
A nucleus that can fuse with another haploid nucleus to form a diploid zygote
What does the acrosome on a sperm cell contain?
Enzymes to digest their way through the cell membrane of an egg cell
What are stem cells?
Cells that can divide to produce specialised cells.
What are embryonic stem cells and what are it’s uses?
Cells extracted from embryos. Uses include replacing or repairing brain cells and replacing damaged cells in the retina
Where are adult stem cells found and what do they do?
Found in tissue such as bone or skin. They divide to replace damaged tissue
