Cell Division and Growth Flashcards
What is mitosis?
A type of cell division that occurs in body cells
In mitosis, what is the cell that is dividing called?
Parent cell
What are the two new cells formed from the parent cell called?
Daughter cells
Why are daughter cells identical
Each chromosome is copied - one copy of each chromosome goes into each daughter cell
Name three differences between mitosis and meiosis
Meiosis produces four haploid daughter cells (mitosis makes two DIPLOIDS)
Daughter cells in meiosis are genetically different (mitosis-identical)
Meiosis only occurs in gamete producing cells (mitosis-body cells)
What causes a tumour?
When cells divide uncontrollably by mitosis
How do plant and animal cells divide?
By mitosis - they then differentiate into specialised cells
