P10.5 Elasticity Flashcards
What is an elastic object
An object that regains it shape when forces deforming it are removed.
The energy that causes it to deform are stored as elastic energy which is released when the force is removed
What is compression and tension
Compression: When an object is compressed (pushed together)
Tension: when an a force pulls on an object
What does it mean if something is proportionality
Corresponding in size or amount to something else
What is hooke’s law
The extension of a spring is directly proportional to the force applies - provided its limit of proportionality is not exceeded
What happens if a spring passes its limit of proportionality
It cannot go to its original shape
How to find force applied
F (N) = k(N/m) x ^X (m)
Force applied = spring constant x extension (final length - original length)
