P10.1 Forces And Motion Flashcards
Describe the trend in a graph that is a diagonal straight line on a force acceleration graph
As the acceleration increases the forces also increases at the same rate.
It is also directly proportional
What is newtons second law
The acceleration of an object is directly proportional to the resultant force of an object
Inversely proportional to the mass of the object
How do you work out the force (F)
F = ma
(m x a)
Rearrange F to find mass
——–
m x a
m = F
——
a
Wht the hell is ‘Inertia’
the tendency of an object to stay in its current state of motion.
(Or the resistance of an object to motion)
Wht is mass and weight
Mass: the amount of matter inside an object (kg)
Weight: the force acting upon an object due to gravity. (N)
How to find weight (W)?
W = mg
(Mass and gravitational field strength)
What is terminal velocity
Terminal velocity is the maximum velocity an object can reach when falling through the air. It happens when the force of gravity pulling the object down is balanced by the air resistance pushing up, so the object stops speeding up and falls at a constant speed
What is stopping distance
The distance it takes for a vehicle to completely stop (thinking distance + breaking distance)
Why would a trucks breaks take longer to stop the vehicle than a small bike
The truck because it has the greatest mass. Therefore it has the greatest momentum. It requires a larger amount of energy to dissipate in order to bring it to a stop
What factors effect thinking distance
Vision
Disability
Alchohol
Drugs
Distractions (phones)
Concentration (tiredness)
Speed of the car
What factors effect braking distance
Condition of the car (tires, brakes)
Weather
Condition of road
Speed
Mass (quanitty of matter)
