P1 Mixed Questions Flashcards
The more reactive the metal …
… the quicker the reaction
What is formed when a metal reacts with water?
A metal hydroxide and hydrogen are formed
eg
Sodium + water = SODIUM HYDROXIDE + Hydrogen
Why does the atomic size increases down group 1 - this is because the amount of electron shells is increasing! You can see this clearly in the picture above.
Because the amount of electron shells is increasing.
eg 2 shells for Lithium - 2.1
eg 4 shells for Potassium - 2.8.8.1
What reaction does iron have with water?
Slowly rusts
What is formed when a metal reacts with a dilute acid?
A salt and hydrogen are formed. Eg
Magnesium + hydrochloric acid → MAGNESIUM CHLORIDE + HYDROGEN
What will happen if Platinum (or any other metal below hydrogen in the reactivity series) is added to a dilute acids.
A metal below hydrogen in the reactivity series will not react with dilute acids.
What is produced when a metal reacts with water or a dilute acid.
Hydrogen
The Chlorine atom is smaller than bromine - why
Chlorine has less shells of electrons than Bromine
Why is fluorine a gas at room temperature?
There are WEAK forces between the MOLECULES which require a little ENERGY to break.
Group 7 - the halogens become darker as you go down the group.
Fluorine is very pale yellow, chlorine is yellow-green, and bromine is red-brown.
What colour of vapour does Iodine forms when it is warmed?
Purple
Which ion is found in all acids?
H+
Name the acid and the metal oxide used to produce ZINC NITRATE
ACID - NITRIC ACID
METAL OXIDE - ZINC OXIDE - ZnO
What does (aq) mean?
Dissolved in water
The PH of a solution is 8. Some hydrocholoric acid is added. What PH is the solution now?
Could be 6 it depends how much hydrochloric acid is added.
