Equilibrium & Le Chatelier's Principle Flashcards
What is a catalyst?
A catalyst
. A substance that INCREASES THE RATE OF CHEMICAL without being used up in the process
. Different reactions need different catalyst
. Eg Iron is used as a catalyst in the manufacturing of Ammonia
Name a chemical catalyst
A chemical catalyst is IRON
What are Reversible Reactions?
In REVERSIBLE REACTIONS the products can react to produce the original REACTANTS
eg
Ammonia Chloride = ammonia + hydrogen chloride
What is the Equilibrium?
During a reversible reaction -
EQUILIBRIUM is when the:
RATE OF THE FORWARD REACTION is equal to the rate of the BACKWARD REACTION
What does Le Chatelier’s Principle state?
Le Chatelier’s Principle state that if:
EQUILIBRIUM (balance) is subjected to a change in CONDITIONS the system shifts to resist the change.
eg If an EXOTHERMIC reaction
If temp is raised the yield decreases
if temp is lowered the yield increases
eg if an ENDOTHERMIC reaction
Why do manufacturers want to use catalysts?
Catalysts speed up reactions to reduce the amount of energy needed and this saves time & money
