1. EXTRA Flashcards
1
Q
Properties of ionic compounds
A
Ionic compounds:
- regular structures
- giant ionic lattice - strong electrostatic forces
- they have high melting points
- they have high boiling points
2
Q
Properties of SIMPLE COVALENT MOLECULES
A
Properties of SIMPLE COVALENT MOLECULES
- only contain a few ATOMS held together by COVALENT BONDS
- EG carbon dioxide - CO2 - contains 1 atom of Carbon and 2 atoms of Oxygen
- LOW melting and LOW boiling points - because little energy is needed to break the weak intermolecular forces
- EG of SIMPLE MOLECULES - H Y D R O G E N - P U R E W A T E R - M E T H A N E - A M M O N I A (its the weak intermolecular forces that break when one is melted or boiled NOT the STRONG COVALENT BONDS)
