P Piston Engine Principals Flashcards
Equation for power
Power = torque x rpm
Equation for torque
Torque = force x distance
Equation for force
Force = pressure x area
What are the stages of a 4 stroke cycle?
- Induction
- Compression
- Power
- Exhaust
What energy is present in the induction stage?
Chemical energy
What energy is present in the compression stage?
Heat energy
What energy is present in the power stage?
Pressure energy
What energy is present in the exhaust stage?
Mechanical energy
What is the position of the piston at the top of the cylinder?
Top dead centre (TDC)
What is the position of the piston at the bottom of the cylinder?
Bottom dead centre (BDC)
What is the name for the distance between TDC and BDC?
Stroke
What happens in the induction stroke?
Piston moves downwards sucking in charge mixture
What happens in the compression stroke?
Charge is compressed, pressure and temperature is increased
What happens in the power stroke?
Charge is ignited, pushes the piston back down
What happens in the exhaust stroke?
Exhaust valve opens and exhaust air is pushed out of the cylinder
