E Batteries Flashcards
In the event of an emergency, how long must a battery provide power for?
Minimum of 30 minutes
4 types of batteries
- Lead acid
- Nickel-Cadmium (Ni-Cad or Ni-Cd)
- Lithium-Ion
- Lithium-Polymer
Typical cell voltage of a lead acid battery
2.2 volts
Typical cell voltage of a NiCad/Li-On battery
1.3 volts
How is battery capacity expressed?
Ampere hours = amps x hours
What is thermal runaway?
Rising temperature reduces resistance which increases current, a self perpetuating loop
How would you extinguish a battery fire?
Depressurise the aircraft, halon extinguisher or full immersion in water
How would you extinguish a passengers electronic device?
Place into a fire resistant bag and place into a galley oven for the duration of the flight
What is the result of batteries in series?
Current is the same, voltage is added up
What is the result of batteries in parallel?
Voltage is the same, current is added up
