P-CIMT: When it's used & how it's used Flashcards
What is P-CIMT?
○ Incorporated into a long term, broad treatment plan, not stand alone
○ For children with unilateral motor impairment regardless of specific cause → hemiparesis
Does not eliminate hemiparesis
How is P-CIMT used?
constraint of less or non-impaired UE
General info on P-CIMT
■ Specific use of systematic techniques to shape, refine and practice movements and functional use of the paretic UE
■ High intensity, natural setting, assist generalization of skills to child’s daily life
■ Developmental disregard → child neglecting to attend to part of her body
■ Generalization of skills
Motor learning
skills development through practice & consistent feedback
1) Cognitive → trial and error
2) Associative → learning to refine skills
3) Autonomous → functional
Principles of P-CIMT drawn from dynamical systems theory
- Learning a whole motor task is more effective and motivating than learning part of a movement.
- Frequent, repetitive practice with consistent and immediate feedback is important for skill acquisition.
- Variability in intervention activities allows the child to learn to adapt new motor skills to the variable demands of real-life contexts.
- Intervention activities must be meaningful to the child.
