Amblyopia (lazy eye)
loss of vision in one eye due to abnormal visual development earlier in life between 0-7 years
Characteristics to amblyopia
■ The weaker eye may deviate medially or laterally
■ Could be due to muscle weakness or nerve damage
■ Usually have low depth perception
■ May tilt head for better visual of what they are reading or looking at
■ May squint or shut eyes when trying to focus
How to treat amblyopia?
glasses, eye patches, surgery
patch used for deviation
Strabismus (cross-eyed or misaligned)
both eyes do not look at same place at the same times
Characteristics of Stabismus
■ Usually occurs in those with poor eye muscle control
■ Not same as amblyopia but can cause it
■ Can develop between 0-3 yrs
■ Caused by problems with eye muscles, the nerves that transmit the info to the muscles,
or the area of the brain that controls eye movement
How to treat strabismus
surgery or lenses
Anirdia (birth defect)
Complete or partial or absence of the iris (colored part of the eye)
characteristics of aniridia
■ Reduction in visual acuity and hypersensitive to light
■ May have other eye problems associated with it such as glaucoma, involuntary eye
movements (nystagmus) and underdeveloped area of the eye that is responsible for
sharp central vision
Nystagmus
to & form mvmt of eyes and eye appears shaking & causes blurred vision
