P-Block - Unit3.3 Flashcards
what are the 2 oxidation states of p-block elements
max: group number
lower: group number - 2
what causes the lower oxidation state
inert pair effect
define the inert pair effect:
= The tendency of S^2 electrons to stay paired (remain inert) and forms the lower oxidation states
how does stability of lower oxidation state change down the group
stability of lower oxidation state increases down the group
which elements are more able to promote 1s electrons to a vacant p-orbital (increase oxidation state)
elements higher up the group
which elements show inert pair effect (and why)
heavier elements show the inert pair effect
- as it requires more energy to promote an S electrons.
what is a P block element
an element where the outer electron lies in the p-subshell
