Oxygen Flashcards
Oxygen rules
- aviators breathing oxygen-bottles will be green with a 3in white band around upper circum. of cylinder
- it shall have “OXYGEN AVIATOR’S” stenciled parallel to the longitudinal axis and on diametrically opposed sides in 2in letters
- pressure in oxygen supply cylinders which replenish aircraft oxygen cylinders shoulod not fall below 50psi, if so label empty, fall below 15psi they shall be removed from service for heat vacuum treatment
- two people are required to service O2, one person shall be stationed at the control valves of the servicing equipment and the other to observe the pressure in the emergency bottle.
M13520.1C 5-4
Gaseous Oxygen characteristics
- high pressure bottles are full at 1800psi, and low pressure full at 300psi
- aviator and medical O2 are different. Med O2 contains more moisture that would freeze and plug lines.
- O2 increases with altitude
- slightly heavier than air than air
- colorless, odorless, tasteless

Where do you not park oxygen carts
areas that are sodded, grassy, or asphalt covered
exception: LOX carts can temporarily be parked on asphalt given proper drip pans are in place
Parking or storing regulations for Gaseous oxygen carts and LOX carts
- 25 ft from structures having fire resistant or non-combustible exterior
walls or with fire extinguishing systems - 50 ft from any combustible structure or sources of ignition, such as
heavy traffic areas, areas where equipment is in operation and smok
-ing areas - 75 ft from parked and 25 ft from FSSZ’s
TO 00-25-172 p. 4-13/14
What is the correct ft away from taxiing aircraft for servicing oxygen?
50 ft( measured from wing tip or closest point of taxiing aircraft to the pressurized oxygen servicing equipment)
TO 00-25-172 4-14
Can you service an aircraft that is adjacent to a parked aircraft that has engines running?
no unless the closest point of the adjacent aircraft is more than 50 ft from the pressurized oxygen servicing equipment
TO 00-25-172 p.4-14
When servicing low pressure oxygen systems what is the maximum allowed pressure regulated to on the valve setting?
475 psig
a relief valve preset of 475 psig shall be installed on the low pressure side of all oxygen service carts
TO 00-25-172 p. 4-14
To avoid heating by sudden compression, open and close all high pressure oxygen valves slowly. If two valves are to be opened which do you open first?
the down stream valve
TO 00-25-172 p.4-14
What PPE shall be worn by all persons servicing oxygen at aircraft connection point
safety goggles, safety glasses with side shield, or face shield
TO 00-25-172 p 4-15
How must the climate and environment be maintained for the oxygen shop
Temperature between 65 and 75 degrees F and humidity below 50%
M13520.1C 5-6
Oxygen shop ventilation and exhaust
Mechanical exhaust fans capable of providing a minimum of 10 air changes per hour shall be used.
Oxygen is 10% denser than air
M13520.1C 5-7
Transformer banks shall be located a minimum of __ ft from transfer shop or storage areas
50 ft
M13520.1A 5-7
What type pen is permitted in the oxygen work area
ball type pens
M13520.1C 5-8
What are some personal cleanliness requirements during oxygen equipment maintenance
- solvent contact with the skin should be avoided
- fingernail polish shall be removed prior to entering shop
- personnel with skin and/or upper respiratory diseases should
not be allowed to work in the overhaul shop area - personnel with colds, temporary coughing, sneezing, and severe
sunburn should be assigned temporary jobs outside the shop until
they have sufficiently recovered
M13520.1C 5-8
How many cylinders are mounted on the gaseous oxygen servicing trailer
08
M13520.1C 5-10
Where do you reference electrical equipment requirements in oxygen maintenance shop
All electrical equipment and electrical wiring shall be procured and maintained in accordance with NAVFAC Specification 9Y (latestrevision).
M13520.1 p 5-10
How far away should oxygen storage be from transformers
Transformer banks shall be located a minimum of 50-feet from transfer shop or storage areas.
M13520.1 p.5-11
What station on the aircraft is where the oxygen shutoff valve is located and other oxygen components
FS 245
Multiple MPCs
What do you reference for oxygen system purge procedures
MPC 351010.0
CGTO 1C-130J-2-35JG-00-1. P. 3
How many portable oxygen bottles are on all coast Guard C-130 aircraft
4- one each at the pilots position and co-pilots position, on the aft side of the 245 bulkhead, and in the cargo compartment aft of the right wheel well
CGTO 1C-130H-2-35GS-00-1 p.4-1
How should oxygen hoses on the C-130H be supported to prevent a tripping hazard which could interfere with the performance of duties or emergency egress from the aircraft
From the ceiling
TO 1C-130H-2-35GS-00-1 p.2-1
The LOX quantity indicator receives what from the AC instruments and engine fuel control bus

There are 2 circuit breakers LIQUID OXY QTY NO.1 and NO.2
TO 1C-130H-2-35GS-00-1. P.2-7
How are the plumbing lines marked
Late model aircraft have all oxygen lines marked with a single green band. Early model aircraft had the filler lines marked with a band colored light green greenyellow-light green and the distribution lines marked with aband colored light green.
TO 15X-1-1 p. 3-16

When does the LOX gauge need calibration
If it does not read the amount of supply expected when full,(i.e. 5, 10, 25, or 75 liters) by within 10 percent, then either the LOX converter is not full, or the LOX quantity gauge needs calibration or replacement.
