Ownership And Control Flashcards
Who produced Black Panther?
Marvel Studios, who became a subsidiary of Disney in 2008.
They are also the film’s distributor which makes this a good example of vertical integration.
What is Vertical Integration?
Refers to an expansion strategy where one company takes control over one or more stages in the production or distribution of a product.
What evidence is there that Disney does not have complete ownership of Marvel’s superhero universe?
After a downturn in success of the Spiderman property, Marvel Studios entered into a deal with Sony to produce a new version of the character based firmly in their shared universe (MCU) and was introduced as a supporting character in Captain America.
Since then he has featured in 3 films of his own (Homecoming, Far From Home, and No Way Home) as profits are shared between both movie studios.
Who bought Marvel?
Disney
When Disney bought Marvel, what did they agree to?
Minimal creative influence over Marvel products
Who did Marvel sign a deal with? When and why?
Netflix, in 2013. To develop a number of TV series for six more characters (including Punisher and Daredevil who had already been made into films)
Why is the deal between Marvel And Netflix now currently problematic?
This may have caused conflict with Disney, who later developed their own streaming channel Disney+ (with characters such as Hawkeye and Loki) and in 2019 Netflix cancelled their Marvel shows.
The Marvel shows can now be found on Disney’s own streaming channel.
