own practical Flashcards
what was the aim of the practical?
to investigate the differences in helpful or polite behaviour, such as someone holding a door open and saying thank you, between males and females in an 8 minute observational study
what was the alternative hypothesis?
females will show more polite behaviour in terms of two types of behaviours chosen: holding the door open for someone and saying thank you than males in an 8 minute observation
what was the null hypothesis?
there will be no difference between males and females in polite behaviour in terms of two types of behaviours chosen; holding the door open for someone and saying thank you to those who hold the door open for you, any differences will be due to chance
what is the IV?
males and females
what is the DV?
polite bhevaiour
holding door open
syaing thanktyou
what design was it?
independant groups design as could only be male and female
what kind of observation was it?
a naturalistic covert observation
what kind of observation sampling was used?
event sampling
who were the participants?
ags
from 16-18
how long was the observation?
8 minutes
how were ppts chosen?
through event sampling
how was tallies taken?
using mobile phones
what was the method?
- 2 behaviours picked
- lower canteen used as the place
- 4 observers situated themselves at 2 tables that were 3 metres away from the door
- 8 minutes tallied eveytime behaviours occurred for both men and women
- observers then compared tallies
- average calculated
how far were observers sat?
3 metres away from observation site
what two behaviours were picked?
holding doors open
saying thank you to someone who held a door open
what were female themes found form qualitative data?
avoided eye contact
what were male themes found from qualitative data?
held door with foot rather than hand
held door more than they said thank you
what were themes found in both genders?
more likely to show either behaviour when accompanied by larger group
more likely to show behaviours when older person present
what statistical test was used?
chi squared
what was the calculate chi squared value?
0.55 at 5% significance level
what was the critical value?
3.83 when df=1 for a two tailed test
what does chi squared tell us?
that because calculated value is lower than critical it shows that results are signifiant
how many polite behaviours did males show?
33
how many polite behaviours did women show?
48
