Overview of the Neck Flashcards
4 compartments of the neck
visceral, 2 vascular, vertebral
Visceral compartment of the neck
Anterior
Contains esophagus, trachea, and thyroid gland
Vertebral compartment of the neck
Posterior
Contains the cervical vertebrae, spinal cord, and muscles associated with the vertebral column
2 Vascular compartments of the neck
One on each side
Contain platysma muscle
Platysma muscle
begins in the superficial fascia of the thorax and attaches to mandible
Facial spaces and infection
Facial spaces provide conduit for spread of infection from neck to thorax. Infections spread within compartments or spaces in between compartments but do not usually spread compartments.
What muscle divides anterior and posterior compartments of the neck
Sternocleidomastoid
Anterior triangle of the neck
Lies anterior to sternocleidomastoid. Superior boundary is anterior border of mandible. Medial boundary is anterior midline of neck
Posterior triangle of neck
lies posterior to sternocleidomastoid. Inferior boundary is middle third of clavicle. Posterior border is anterior border of trapezius.
Sternocleidomastoid origin and insertion
Origin: sternum and clavicle
Insertion: mastoid process
Unilateral contraction of sternocleidomastoid
causes lateral flexion and rotates head to opposite side
Bilateral contraction of sternocleidomastoid
Flexes neck
