Overview of the Back Flashcards
intervertebral joints
there are 3 joints between each pair of adjoining vertebrae
synovial joint
2 between articular process (fluid between)
not synovial joints
1 between vertebral bodies
intervertebral disc parts
annulus fubrosus and nucleus pulposus
annulus fibrosis
composed of tough tissue, outer ring
nucleus pulposus
inside, composed of jelly filling; when we move we displace is and the nucleus pulposus squished so we can move
CLINICAL: herniated disc
when enough pressure is applied to vertebrae an annulus fibrosus will rupture or tear, this makes the nucleus pulposus squeeze out; pushes on nervous tissue canal
extention
reach back
flexion
sit up/pick up
lateral flexion
lean left and right
rotation
rotate from side to side
superficial back muscles
muscles associated with the movement of your upper limbs, not true back muscles
erector spinae muscles actions
attach to vertebrae medically and ribs laterally (bulk attach to the axial skeleton) actions depends on what muscles are active (muscles straighten/extend spine)
unilaterally
use only one side at a time, allow us to have control, produce lateral bending
bilaterally
use muscles on both sides, extension!
