Histology Flashcards
cell
the basic unit of an organism, maintain life and processes, produce substances and interact with other cells
tissues
organized groups of cells and their products, over 200 types of cells, 4 types of tissues
organ
self contained, vital function
epithelium
lines pretty much everything, consists of lots of cells put together, specialized to interact with the environment it contacts, (cells attached by specialized structures at the top) supported by underlying tissues, over turn rapidly, produce products such as hair, mucus, sweat, oil
connective
sparce cells surrounded in cell products, (bone and cartilage, tendons and ligaments, fat and fascia blood)
nervous tissue
neurons, and supporting cells; groups of axons look white (because of myelin), groups of cell bodies look gray, peripheral “nerves” are clusters of axons
central (nerve tissue)
brain and spinal chord
peripheral (nerve tissue)
spinal nerves and their branches
somatic (nerve tissue)
“normal” sensory and motor nerves
autonomic
sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system
muscle tissue
specialized for contraction
skeletal (muscle tissue)
occur in muscles which are attached to the by tendons skeleton, striated in appearance and are under voluntary control; born with all you will have, grow when workout
smooth (muscle tissue)
located in walls of hollow visceral organs, appear spindle shaped, and are under involuntary control (stomach and intestines), small cells everywhere
cardiac (muscle tissue)
located in the walls of the heart, appear striated, and are under involuntary control
we can tell in which direction a muscle will shorten by…
looking at the orientation of its fibers
