Overview of terminology and skeletal system Flashcards
how many bones in the skeleton?
206
define condyle
a smooth, rounded prominence of a bone that forms joints
define foramen
rounded hole in bone where nerves and blood vessels go
List the fibrous joints
Suture, syndesmosis, gomphosis
list the cartilaginous/fibrocartilaginous joints?
Synchondrosis, symphysis
What is a syndesmosis and give an example?
It is an immovable joint in which bones are joined by connective tissue. Like between the radius and ulna and tibia and fibula
What is a gomphosis?
joint between teeth and alveolar bone
what is a synchondrosis?
a joint where the connecting medium is hyaline cartilage. It is also called a primary cartilaginous joint
what is a symphysis?
an immmovable joint that closely joins two bones, like the pubic symphysis
What are the common features of a synovial joint?
joint capsule of fibrous tissue, joint cavity enclosed by capsule, synovial membrane lining capsule, synovial fluid covering joint surfaces, usually hyaline cartilage covering joint surfaces
What are the types of synovial joints?
Plane (gliding), hinge, pivot, condyloid, saddle, ball and socket
ex of a plane joint
no clear axis of motion, like in the wrist bones
ex of hinge joint?
uniaxial, like in knee
ex of pivot joint?
uniaxial, like in elbow
ex of condyloid joint?
biaxial, like in knuckles
