Overview of Metabolism Flashcards
What is metabolism?
Series of enzyme reactions within cells to convert fuels into useful energy
What is Catabolism?
Generates ATP and NADH
ends in -Lysis
What is Anabolism?
Uses ATP, GTP and UTP (mainly in cytosol)
ends in -Genesis
Full equation for mitochondrial respiration?
C6H12O6 + 6 O2 –> 6 CO2 + 6 H2O + 30 ATP + 2 GTP
Features of ATP?
The energy of the cell
Adenosine Triphosphate
stable at 6-9 pH
Phosphoanhydride bond can be broken by hydrolysis to form ADP+Pi and energy
It drives pumps, transporters, contractive events and movement
Endergonic and Exergonic reactions?
Endergonic is where energy is absorbed
Exergonic is where energy is released
Allosteric inhibition and activation?
Inhibition is where a molecules blocks an enzyme
Activation is where molecules stimulate enzymes
