Ovaries Flashcards
What hormones do the ovaries produce?
Progesterone, Estrogen, inhibin, and Relaxen
What are the three layers of the ovary?
Germinal Epithelium (surface), Ovarian Cortex, Ovarian Medulla
What is the germinal epithelium?
Covers surface of ovary
What is the ovarian cortex?
Connective tissues containing follicles deep to the germinal epithelium
What do the surrounding cells in the cortex do?
Nourish oocyte & produce estrogen as the follicle grows.
What do oocytes grow into?
Follicles under the influence of hormone.
What do follicles mature into?
Mature Graafian follicle.
What happens when the follicle ruptures?
Oocyte leaves the ovary
What do remnants of the ovulated follicle develop into?
The corpus luteum and produce progesterone, estrogens, relaxin, and inhibin.
Following hormone production what occurs?
Degenerates into the corpus albicans, but if fertilization takes place is saved and continues to produce hormones.
What is the ovarian medulla region deep to the cortex?
Consists of loose connective tissues containing blood vessels, lymphatic vessels and nerves
