Mammary Glands Flashcards
Where are the mammary glands?
Located in the breasts
Modified sudoriferous glands produce milk
Nipple: pigmented projection with duct openings where milk emerges
Areola: surrounds the nipple and is rough because it contains sebaceous glands
How many internal lines are there?
15-20 that are separated by adipose tissue and strands of connective tissue called suspension ligaments
In each line are lobules in which milk secreting glands called alveoli are. Milk passes from alveoli by tubule to the nipple.
When do female breasts develop and why?
At puberty, under the influence of estrogen and progesterone.
The duct system matures, fat is deposited, areola and nipple enlarge and darken.
What are the functions of the mammary glands?
Synthesis, secretion and ejection of milk known as lactation.
Milk production stimulated by prolactin.
Ejection of milk stimulated by oxytocin.
