Ponyboy’s hair was so important to him because as he expressed in the story, the socs get everything they want while the greasers get nothing. The only thing they get is there hair and that’s what identifies them

The Letter that Sodapop wrote explains a little of what happened after he went missing and how Darrys is sorry that he hit him and is crazy worried about him. It also says how they wish he never ran away but they understand what happened.

Why does Johnny decide to turn himself in?
Johnny decides to turn himself in as he has multiple reasons such as having alibis and killing in self defense that can make him not get in as much trouble. He also wants to go because ponyboy was dragged into this by him

When Johnny and Ponyboy find out kids are in the church, they hope in the window and save them. In this situation for some odd reasons, they aren’t sacred and save everyone but johnny who gets trapped in the wreckage
