Prepositions preceding countries and regions.
En is used in front of a feminine country or region.
Je vais en Allemagne.
I am going to Germany.
Ils habitent en Italie.
They live in ltaly.
Elles arrivent en Indonésie.
They arrive in lndonesia.
Il est en Floride.
He is in Florida.
Au is used in front of a masculine country or region.
Elles sont au Venezuela.
They are in Venezuela.
Tu vas au Luxembourg.
You are going to Luxembourg.
Il habite au Québec.
He lives in Quebec.
Aux is used in front of plural countries or regions.
Amélie habite aux États-Unis.
Amélie lives in the United States.
Nous allons aux Antilles.
We are going to the Antilles.

Prepositions preceding cities.
The preposition à, meaning “in,” “at” or “to,” is used with cities.
Il va à Paris.
He is going to Paris.
Elle est à Moscou.
She is in Moscow.
Nous sommes à Tokyo.
We are in Tokyo.
A few cities have an article: La Nouvelle-Orléans, Le Havre.
Il habite à La Nouvelle-Orléans.
He lives in New Orleans.
Elle va au Havre.
She is going to Le Havre.

The preposition de used with cities and countries means “from.” If
the country is masculine or plural, de is contracted with the article (du,
masculine; des, plural). For the feminine, only de or d’ is used.
Before a feminine country:
J’arrive de France.
I arrive from France.
Elle arrive d’Italie.
She arrives from ltaly.
Before a masculine country:
Je suis du Brésil.
I am from Brazil.
Il est du Guatemala.
He is from Guatemala.
Before a plural country:
Ils arrivent des États-Unis.
They arrive from the United States.
Before a city:
Elle est de Bordeaux.
She is from Bordeaux.
d. The preposition dans means “in.” lts usage is varied.
Marc est dans la chambre.
Marc is in the bedroom.
Elle est dans la boutique.
She is in the shop.
