Negation

Question 1

To make a sentence negative, ne … pas is placed around the verb.

Answer 1

Je suis libre.
I am free.
Je ne suis pas libre.
I am not free.
Il parle portugais.
He speaks Portuguese.
Il ne parle pas portugais.
He does not speak Portuguese.

Question 2

If ne precedes a verb starting with a vowel or a mute h, the e of ne is
dropped.

Answer 2

Il habite à Berlin.
He lives in Berlin.
Il n’habite pas à Berlin.
He doesn’t live in Berlin.
Vous étudiez la musique.
You study music.
Vous n’étudiez pas la musique.
You don’t study music.
