Other external wall finishes Flashcards
Functional requirements for other wall finishes
Planting materials/finishes that are problematic, and raise concerns needing further investigations, include:
Other parts of building construction also have a significant impact on risk, these include:
Finishes and their types:
-Tile hanging (or vertical tiling) – slate hanging -cladding boards, to include: timber cladding, manufactured/composite cladding boards (PVCu cladding boards, plastic/resin based cladding boards, fibre cement boards) -Brick slips/thin stone cladding -metal cladding: to include lead sheets and zinc sheets – high-pressure laminate – cedar shingles – asbestos cement sheets – aluminium composite material
The background structure and things to consider:
– Movement/movement joints
– penetrations through finishes
– timber framed structures
– metal and concrete frame structures
Some of the environmental factors that can affect building materials including can include:
– Temperature changes resulting in freeze/thaw cycles
– temperature changes causing expansion/contraction
– exposure to UV radiation
– long-term dampness
– wind imposed loads
Common compatibility and integration problems relating to cladding include:
– Inappropriate fixings used
– flashings/weatherproof detail is not adequately provided/linked
- water draining out from background not dealt with correctly
- inclusion of barriers preventing water vapour passing out of building interior
- damp proof course is not continuous through whole structure
– structure more flexible which moves more than the cladding tinkles cracking
