Other Disorders Flashcards
Congenital deformity of skeletal & soft tissue
Not much information due to the infrequency of the condition
Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita
Caused by restricted movement in utero causing fibrosis of muscles & joints
A connective tissue disorder with inflammation in the muscles and skin
If treated early on, prognosis is good. Typically treated with medications
Dermatomyositis
Unknown cause, but possibly infections
The recessive form of muscular dystrophy
A progressive disease with life expectancy in the thirties
Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy
Caused by mutation of the dystrophin gene
An inherited connective disorder which affect the skin, joints & blood vessel walls
Normal life span; Vascular Ehler Danlos Syndrome may be life threatening
Ehler Danlos Syndrome
Caused by mutations in the COL5A/COL3A genes, which are involved with collagen
Inflammation of joints and connective tissue; arthritis in children
Needs quick recognition and treatment for a good outcome
JRA
An autoimmune disease
Genetic connective tissue disorder
Prognosis is good; however, some related conditions can be life threatening such as aortic aneurysm & mitral valve prolapse
Marfan Syndrome
Caused by an abnormal fibrillin-1 gene
Degeneration of articular cartilage resulting in deformity & thickening of bone
Main treatment is lifestyle management
Osteoarthritis
Caused by stress combined with insufficient repair of the joints
Abnormal collagen synthesis during bone development resulting in abnormal bone formation; Connective tissue disorder
Currently has no cure
Osteogenesis Imperfecta
Genetic inheritance; Types I, IV, III, II (in order of severity)
Abnormal alignment of TMJ
Good as symptoms usually improve over time
TMJ Dysfunction
Caused by structural derangement or trauma; meniscus becomes compressed and torn resulting in bone on bone
