Ankle Flashcards
Pain in Achilles tendon
Slow to heal
Achilles Tendonitis
Caused by sudden plantarflexion, overuse/repetition, or faulty mechanics
Inflammation of the plantar fascia at the medial tubercle of calcaneus
Will improve within a few months with treatment
Plantar Fasciitis
Caused by repetitive micro trauma which over time creates chronic inflammation and micro tears
Deformity with the heel pointing downward and forefoot turning inward
Treatment needs to start early to create a normal foot with therapy
Talipes Equinovarus
Caused by positioning in utero, defect in ovum, familial tendency, lack of movement in utero
Tendonitis of long flexor and post tibialis tendon
Decompression is usually successful in decreasing the symptoms, but complete healing is rare
Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome
Entrapped posterior tibial nerve or one of its branches within the tarsal tunnel
High arch, notably hollow even when bearing weight
Surgery is needed to correct the problem, but the outcome is varied
Pes Cavus
Genetic predisposition
Flat feet
Can use medication and orthotics to manage the condition
Pes Planus
Genetic predisposition
Birth defect where the foot is twisted out of shape or position
The Ponseti method is effective in treating it in most cases; otherwise, surgery is required
Talipes Equinovarus
Exact cause unknown, but intra-uterine mal position is a possibility
Bunion; enlargement of the bone at the big toe joint
Surgery is needed to completely correct the bunion
Hallux Valgus
Caused by pressures from bearing weight unevenly on the joints and tendons of the feet
An overuse injury with pain located over the metatarsal head
Can be treated, but patient needs to be careful during healing
Metatarsalgia
Caused by overuse and pressure over the forefoot
Birth deformity where the front half of the foot is turned inward
If the foot is flexible, the doctor can straighten it and immediately fix the deformity
Metatarsus Adductus
Thought to be due to the position of the infant in the womb
