What electrolyte imbalances do you get with FFP/Platlets/Blood products?
Hypocalcemia - FFP and platelets contain citrate therefore can chelate calcium.
Hyperkalemia - red cells stored for 4-5 weeks have 5-10mmol K+
What are the features of TRALI?
Occurs within 6 hours of transfusion
Acute non-cardiac pulmonary oedema- respiratory distress - hypoxiamia - hypotension - fever
Rx- supportive care, O2, fluid maintainence, NOT diuretics (these are used in TACO)
Features of cavernous sinus syndrome?
Pain - local invasion (eg NAsopharnygeal tumour)
Opthalmapegia - compression of cn3,4,6
Proptosis - enlarged cavernous sinus
Trigeminal nerve lesion - opthalmic branch - loss of corneal reflex
Horners syndrome - at level of internal carotid artery - postgangiolnic (no anhidrosis, ptosis and myosis seen)
Differentials for abdo pain radiating to the back with hypotension?
Leaking AAA until proven otherwise
DDx: acute pancreatitis, mesenteric thrombosis, MI, perforated peptic ulcer
Immediate management for someone with sudden bilateral sensorineural hearing loss?
Corticosteroids(Pred) for 2 weeks
What is it called when you take biopsies at the time of surgery and analyse straight away?
