OSMOSIS Liver, Bile and Enterohepatic circ Flashcards

1
Q

What are the three components of the porta hepatic?

A

Hepatic artery > delivers oxygen to liver
Hepatic portal vein > delivers nutrient rich blood from GI tract

Q

Explain bilirubin formation

A

In liver macrophage (Kupfer cell): RBC is destroyed into heme and Fe2+

Heme > biliverdin > bilirubin (unconjugated)

Q

What happens to bilirubin once it is formed?

A

Bilirubin enters bloodstream

Bilirubin binds to albumin

Now bilirubin travels into hepatocyte

It becomes CONJUGATED BILIRUBIN

It is secreted into ballglladder

It is kept there for storage

Upon stimulus, it flows into the intestine

5% becomes stercobilinogen > excreted

95% urobilinogen, of which most is recycles
(small amount goes into urine)
