OSMOSIS Liver, Bile and Enterohepatic circ Flashcards
What are the three components of the porta hepatic?
Hepatic artery > delivers oxygen to liver
Hepatic portal vein > delivers nutrient rich blood from GI tract
Common hepatic duct > drains bile from liver into gallbladder
What are Kopfer cells?
Macrophages of the liver
What are functions of Kopfer cells?
Destroy old RBC, WBC, bacteria, foreign substances
What is the precursor of bile salts?
cholesterol
What are the components of bile?
Bile salts
Bilirubin
Cholesterol
Where is bile made?
In the liver
Where is bile stored?
in the gall bladder
Explain bilirubin formation
In liver macrophage (Kupfer cell): RBC is destroyed into heme and Fe2+
Heme > biliverdin > bilirubin (unconjugated)
What happens to bilirubin once it is formed?
Bilirubin enters bloodstream
Bilirubin binds to albumin
Now bilirubin travels into hepatocyte
It becomes CONJUGATED BILIRUBIN
It is secreted into ballglladder
It is kept there for storage
Upon stimulus, it flows into the intestine
5% becomes stercobilinogen > excreted
95% urobilinogen, of which most is recycles
(small amount goes into urine)
