Osmosis Flashcards
Osmosis definition
The movement of particles from a dilute to a more concentrated solution through a partially permeable membrane
Solvent
A liquid which a solute dissolves in
Solute
The substance that dissolves in a liquid to form a solution
Solution
Mixture formed when a solute has dissolved in a solvent
Hypertonic solution
Concentration of the solutes on the solution surrounding the cell is higher than inside the cell (less water) - movement out of the cell
Isotonic solution
Concentration of solutes in the solution surrounding the cell is the same as inside the cell- no net movement
Hypotonic solution
Concentration of solutes surrounding the cell is lower than inside the cell (more water) - movement into the cell
Partially permeable membrane
Only allows certain substances to move through it
