Digestion Flashcards
Digestion definition
The break down of large food molecules into smaller water soluble molecules
Mouth
Chews food with teeth and swallows
Salivary glands
Contains saliva with the enzyme carbohydrase
Oesophagus
Tube that connects the mouth to the stomach
Liver
Produces bile which breaks down large fat molecules into smaller droplets
Gall bladder
Stores bile
Stomach
Contains protease and hydrochloric acid to kill bacteria
Pancreas
Produces carbohydrase , lipase and protease and releases them into the small intestine
Small intestine
Where absorption of the food molecules into the bloodstream take place
Large intestine
Water from the waste food is absorbed here
Rectum
Where faeces is stored
Anus
Where faeces leaves the body
What do enzymes do
Break down large insoluble molecules into small soluble ones
Substrate
The molecule that is being broken down
Enzyme substrate complex
Forms when the substrate fits into the active site
