He was the first psychologist
What is introspection?
The examination of ones own thought processes, feelings, emotions and sensations
What is the result of introspection?
It is a form of self-examination, so thought are recorded to break down their response and reactions
What is science?
Building knowledge through systematic and objective measurement
What does science need to be?
Empirical, controlled, replicable and objective
What does empirical mean?
Actual systematic observations, not just ideas
What is the first step of psychology emerging as a science?
Introspection - was biased and not objective
What is the second step of psychology emerging as a science?
Behaviourism - observable and measurable as lab experiments, objective but can’t study internal processes
What s the third step is psychology becoming a science?
Cognitive revolution - trying to study internal processes in a scientific way
What is the final step of psychology emerging a science?
Biological approach - better technology investigating live brain activity and internal mental processes
What is different about the psychodynamic and humanistic approach to the others?
They aren’t considered scientific
What is an approach?
A view that involves certain assumptions about human behaviour
