Cognitive approach Flashcards
What is the cognitive approach?
It studied mental processes that were ignored by behaviourists
What are the assumptions of the cognitive approach?
Behaviour is a result of internal mental processes (cognition), we behave as a exult of how we think and process sensory information and internal mental processes can’t be directly studied so need inferences
How does the cognitive approach investigate behaviour?
Lab experiments
How does the cognitive approach used inferences?
They used lab experiments and drew conclusion about mental processing by testing performance in cognitive tasks
What is an inference?
Making an assumption based off your results
What is a schema?
A mental framework of beliefs and expectations based off experience
What is the effect of schemas?
It helps process information as a mental shortcut but may also distort interpretations of sensory input
What is cognitive neuroscience?
A scientific study of biological structures that underpin cognitive processes, allowing researchers to study brain activity
What is the result of cognitive neuroscience?
Less need to rely on inferences, allows brain mapping and is useful for studying memory and mental disorders
