Biological approach Flashcards
How has the biological approach changed?
It pre-dates psychology and is now incorporated into psychology
What are the assumptions of the biological approach?
All behaviour and psychological traits have biological bases and are a result of internal physiological processes, explores the role of genes, neurochemistry and biological structures and that behaviour can be inherited
How does the biological approach investigate?
Twin studies, lab experiments and brain scans
What do twin studies do?
Compare behaviour and psychological traits between twins to see if their genetic
What is genotype?
The actual set of genes
What is phenotype?
The characteristics an individual determined by both genes and the environment
What is the relationship between characteristics of an organism and its genes?
All organisms has a set of characteristics encoded by its genes, which are inherited from its parents, passed on by natural and sexual selection
What determines an organisms ability to survive?
How well its characteristics allow it to exploit the opportunities available in the environment and avoid or deal with treats in the environment
What does the biological approach assume about behaviour?
It can be inherited like physical features so tried to explain behaviour in terms of evolution
