Organization of the Sympathetic Nervous System and Visceral Sensory Pathways Flashcards
How are 14 spinal cord levels (T1-L2) able to supply innervation to sweat glands for 31 dermatomes?
The sympathetic truck is used to allow T1-L2 to share their preganglionic axons with somites at every level?
Really go ever all types of innervation pathways: Sympathetic to all body regions and parasympathetic to all body levels.

Where are the cell bodies for Sympathetic pathway to Thoracic organs located?
In the Lateral horn of the CNS
What is a splanchnic nerve in relation to the sympathetic innervation of thoracic organs?
The post-ganglionic neuron that passes through the para-vertebral ganglion and innervates the target tissue.
How does the sympathetic pathway differ when innervating thoracic organs vs. Abdominal and Pelvic organs?
For Thoracic Organs T1-5: the synapse is located in the para-vertebral ganglion, and then the post-ganglionic neuron travels through the splanchnic nerve to the target tissue.
For Abdominal and Pelvic organs T5-L12: the preganglionic neuron travels through the paravertebral ganglion through the splanchnic nerve to the prevertebral ganglion where is synapses with the postganlionic neuron which travels to the target tissue.
Where is the prevertebral ganglion located?
by the aorta.
What structures do the post-ganglionic neurons follow to the target tissues?
they follow the blood vessels to the target tissue.
